Vision

Department of English at Anna University aspires to empower engineering and technology students with effective communication skills in English and the requisite intercultural competence which will enable them to function effectively in the global scenario. The Department also strives to inculcate ethics and values which will result in the holistic development of young professionals. The Department aims to be recognized as a Nodal centre for research, teaching, design of learning materials and testing, to English Language teachers in the Technical institutions in Tamil Nadu.

Mission

To facilitate the acquisition of communication skills in English with a humane approach. To use innovative language teaching methods, materials and ICT tools for imparting language skills effectively. To instill a spirit of enquiry in the students. To function as a premier centre in the teaching of English for Specific Purposes in Tamil Nadu. To collaborate with institutional and industrial partners within and outside the country to expand the scope of the activities of the department in relevant areas of research.

Thrust Areas

English Language Teaching

Research at the department is mainly focused on English Language Teaching. The department strives towards developing English language teaching methods and materials that meets the needs of the engineering and technology students at Anna University.

Technology in ELT

The department has always made attempts to use technology as a tool i) for preparing language learners at the university to meet the challenges and demands of new communication behaviours in the society that technologies bring in from time to time ii) for teaching and learning in the English language classroom that aids the learners in making language learning easier and learner centred.

Teacher Training

As a department at an affiliating university, the English Department conducts numerous teacher training programmes and workshops. The training programmes aim to provide continuous professional development for English teachers in schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu. In the last 10 years, the department has collaborated with different institutions all over Tamil Nadu to conduct training programmes while also hosting teachers at the University campus for such events.
